Edvard Munch – Summernight. The Voice (1896)
This work captures the heavy, silent atmosphere of ‘nature mysticism’, characterised by deep blue hues and long, rhythmic lines that echo the curves of the shoreline. The composition is defined by a striking contrast between the vertical lines of the pine trees and the standing woman, and the horizontal calm of the coast. A pillar of moonlight reflecting on the water cuts through the darkness, acting as a phallic symbol that emphasises the scene’s smouldering erotic tension.
A Study in Forbidden Love:
This painting serves as a visual echo of Munch’s first great romance with Milly Thaulow, a married woman whom he referred to in his diaries as ‘Fru Heiberg’. Initially presented in Berlin in 1893 as the first in a series of studies: Love (later known as The Frieze of Life), the image transcends the mere depiction of a landscape. It stands as a testament to the haunting persistence of memory and the yearning attached to forbidden love.
