Edvard Munch – Self-Portrait with Cigarette (1895)
Emerging like a spectre from a sea of shadow, Munch does not present himself as a master, but as a dissolving figure, illuminated by a ghostly theatrical underspill. The burning cigarette in his hand serves as the spiritual anchor of the composition — a symbol of the ‘modern, nervous soul’ and the transient nature of existence. The blue haze of smoke acts as a veil, separating the artist from the world, and emphasises his ‘thin, dissolving body’ as a vessel of sensitivity rather than strength.
The Black Angels of the Bohème:
Upon its debut in 1895, this work sparked a moral panic, leading a medical student named Johan Scharffenberg to publicly diagnose Munch with ‘mental degeneration’. The cigarette was condemned as a symbol of the ‘Kristiania Bohème’, representing social dissolution, deviance, and a rejection of bourgeois values. However, the image is a testament to Munch’s acceptance of his own fragility. As he famously declared, ‘Sickness and insanity were the black angels that guarded my cradle’, transforming his vulnerability into his only true source of creative power.
