Franz von Stuck – Lost (Verirrt) (1891)
This painting by Franz von Stuck depicts the Greek god Pan, the god of shepherds, wild nature and rustic music, shivering and wandering hopelessly through a barren, unforgiving snowscape. Franz von Stuck, who would later become known as the ‘Prince of Art’, portrays the mythological deity not as he is usually depicted, in a state of virile power, but as he is here, in a moment of pathetic vulnerability, displaced from the warmth of Arcadia into a stark winter reality.
The painting’s visual impact lies in the tragicomic absurdity of the scene. It captures the profound feeling of ‘existential displacement’ — being utterly unequipped for one’s environment. The image resonates with the modern-day conflict between instinct and a cold, indifferent world, stripping a god of his dignity and revealing his raw, shivering humanity.
The Prince and the Jester:
Created just one year before Stuck co-founded the Munich Secession and achieved widespread fame with The Sin, this work reveals his early affinity for caricature and illustration. Although Stuck went on to teach masters such as Kandinsky and Klee, and to live like a nobleman, Der Irrtum remains a testament to his sharper, more satirical vision. The work can be interpreted as a metaphor for the artist’s own journey or the ‘spiritual homelessness’ of the modern soul, proving that even gods can freeze.
