Edvard Munch – Verzweiflung (Despair) (1892)
This oil painting depicts a solitary man leaning against a railing. His face is a blank mask, paralysed beneath a sky of ‘coagulated blood’. The dizzying perspective of the bridge, which cuts through the dark fjord landscape, creates a ‘suffocating internal world’ in which the environment acts as a direct reflection of the psyche.
Visual tension arises from the contrast between the isolated figure and the two figures walking away in the distance — the ‘others’ who remain oblivious to his torment. As the immediate visual and thematic precursor to The Scream, this work abandons naturalism in order to convey the intense, pulsating emotion of existential anxiety.
The Scream of Nature:
The work was inspired by a panic attack that Munch experienced while walking near Oslo at sunset, when he saw the clouds turn into ‘flaming swords’. Consequently, the image serves as a metaphor for the terrifying isolation of the individual, capturing the precise moment the artist felt ‘a great, infinite scream pass through nature’.
