Adam Chmielowski – Death and conflagration, central section of the triptych “Disaster” (1870)
This haunting work forms the central panel of the Disaster triptych, a format traditionally reserved for sacred altarpieces. Rather than depicting the adrenaline of battle, it portrays the suffocating, silent aftermath of the January Uprising of 1863 – a national catastrophe that cost the artist, Adam Chmielowski, his leg and his youth.
