Der Anarchist (The Anarchist) (1894)
This drawing portrays a muscular nude male, seen from behind, bearing the heavy burden of a live bomb like a modern Heracles. He stands alone before the daunting gate of an Assyrian temple, guarded by winged bulls and a shadowy, enthroned ruler in the distance.
The image balances the terror of political violence with the allure of supreme individualism. While the anarchist was the era’s ultimate villain – empowered by the terrifying new technology of dynamite – Schneider renders him as a figure of defiance against a rigid, ancient order. The tension lies in the impending destruction of the establishment by a single, solitary man.
A Trauma Transformed:
The work is rooted in profound trauma; as a ten-year-old in St. Petersburg, Schneider witnessed the assassination of Tsar Alexander II, a memory that haunted his artistic vision. However, viewed through the lens of Schneider’s life as a gay man in imperial Germany, the bomb becomes a metaphor for the “explosive potential of repressed identity.” It represents the radical, terrifying freedom required to break societal chains and be one’s true self.
